Microsoft promises Exchange improvements

"Support for open encryption standards and a more intelligent calendar are among the things being promised for the next version of the software leviathan’s email server softwar.
Mail servers running on the new version of Microsoft Exchange will encrypt Internet traffic using open standards, a Microsoft executive said.
"If two customers are running E12, it will automatically create a secure connection", said Kim Akers, Microsoft Exchange group senior director. Exchange 12 or E12 is the code name for the next version, and is scheduled for release in late 2006.
The feature will be based on the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) public key encryption and X.509 digital certificate standards."

"Microsoft just released SBS2003 SP1. This brings all 2003 Windows Servers to the same update level. These updates are an important appointment to Windows administrators and SBS SP1 promises to keep up with the tradition.
If you consider an SP update to be big, than have a look at the requirements list! The links to these updates are all available from the SBS SP1 download page. As usual the installation will also automatically detect missing requirements.
Additional Requirements:
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
- Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
- Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
- Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
To begin with you need to install the Windows Server 2003 SP1!! Yes this is the one you were told not to install a few weeks ago. SBS2003 SP1 solves the issues that caused this update to be a no go for SBS.
With such a requirement list you really have to plan carefully. Just adding up the file sizes of the four required updates plus SBS SP1 itself you have a whopping 906Mb. SBS users are sometimes known not to test updates that carefully. For this time I really think you should try your best on getting hold of a test machine and give it a test run. This is even more important considering that this SP cannot be uninstalled."

XADM: STM File Association Changes When You Install a Third-Party MP3 Player

"After you install a third-party MP3 software package on an Exchange 2000 server, Exchange creates an association for files ending in .stm for the MP3 player. By default, Exchange 2000 streaming database files end in .stm, and therefore, are also associated with the MP3 software."

Jeg har de sidste par dage haft travlt med at poste om diverse "Blackberry killers", men har helt glemt at informere Blackberry langt om længe er en realitet i Danmark. Det er TDC (til at starte med ihvertfald) der er begyndt at tilbyde produktet i Danmark.

When IISReset Kills
Har jeg faktisk ikke selv spekuleret nærmere over når jeg har pillet ved OWA virtual foldere, SMTP, SSL m.m.
"IISReset is a popular IIS management tool. In earlier IIS versions it was quite often used to restart web servers. Exchange administrators sometimes use this to restart the SMTP service. As a developer I find this handy myself when working on IIS extensions. IISReset with the restart parameter is a quick lazy way to force all services back to a fresh state."

I've recently done extensive research on this very topic which i will now share with you (this is a long post so go get a cup of tea now...).
IMHO, Windows Mobile 2003 combined with the current release of Exchange 2003 or SBS 2003 is ALREADY a Blackberry killer.
Lets assume that youur target organization already has Windows and Exchange (or SBS) and the prerequisite MS CALs although it doesnt make much odds as both solutions need them so it would be a cost option for both.

New Public Folder Administration coming in Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2
Lidt omkring Public Folder administration i Exchange 2003 SP2:
"Each week, we examine the top Support Services (used to be called PSS) calls and how much it’s costing the company to service these calls. While public folder administration does not by itself compose a high percentage of these costs, a high percentage of the public folder administration issues stem from one single dialog and a complete misunderstanding of what it does.
I’m speaking of the right-click menu item off of a public folder in ESM called "Propagate Settings". What this dialog allows an admin to do is copy particular properties of the selected folder to all of the subfolders beneath it. Seems fairly self-evident, except people are led to believe that delta changes they just made to the selected folder (such as adding a user to the ACL, or making some change to the folder’s replica list) is what will be propagated. Not so! The dialog only copies the current settings to all the subfolders. This usually results in spectacular replication storms if the admin is propping down changes to the replica list.
As a result, we’ve replaced the Propagate Settings dialog with the Manage Settings wizard. The wizard has three gross paths: 1) do things the old way (when you really do want to copy properties to all the subfolders), 2) make a delta change to the folders’ client permissions, and 3) make a delta change to the folders’ replica list. You can add, remove or replace replicas and users, and you can also modify permissions of a single user. So, say you’re interested in moving a hierarchy of folders off of one server onto some other server. You don’t know offhand which folders in that hierarchy are presently on your source server. No problem! Just use the Replace a Replica path through the wizard to replace server A with server B. It’ll only affect folders where server A is presently a replica, so the rest of the folders in that portion of the hierarchy will remain unaffected."

Interessante spekulationer omkring MS antivirus software i næste uge:
"Speculation among security industry sources suggests that Microsoft may be preparing to introduce its standalone antivirus software next week.
Industry watchers said Thursday that the software giant very well could take the wraps off its emerging security product plans in a scheduled announcement on Monday, although the sources indicated their belief that the applications themselves may not reach the market for several more months. Microsoft representatives did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the rumor."

Interessant undersøgelse af Ferris Research:
"The problem of email interruptions is serious, and raises the question: How freqently should one check email?
We now summarize the conclusion of a recent research study conducted by the authors. The goal was to identify the most efficient and effective email processing strategy.
Recommendation
The best email processing strategy is to process email two to four times a day. This reduces the number of interruptions as well as your workload. This policy applies across different work environments and different types of workers.
Processing emails twice to four times a day results in minimum worker distraction due to interruptions while keeping the balance between email response time and primary task completion time.
Caveats
The impact of different time zones on email arrival pattern was not modeled in this study.
The study didn’t consider the behavioral differences among knowledge workers. Our findings suggest what a knowledge worker should ideally do but these policies need not always behave in the same manner if the behavioral aspects are to be considered. For instance, some workers like variety and work more efficiently with interruptions than others."

There will be no ROM upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 for existing Windows Mobile smartphones
Trist er det eneste jeg har at sige, men okay hvis jeg ser på det fra den positive side er det blot endnu et argument for at skifte min "gamle" C500 ud med en af de nye modeller der er på vej
"Distributors and operators want you to buy new phones with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of upgrading your old phones to Windows Mobile 5.0!
Interestingly ROM images with Windows Mobile 5.0 exist for HTC Typhoon (Orange SPV C500, Audiovox SMT 5600, etc), for HTC Blue Angel and other models, but they will not be available for customers, because operators and distributors want you to buy new phones with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of upgrading new ones...

Så lige en offline version af denne WebCast der oprindeligt blev sendt d. 4 maj 2005. Chris Adams som afholder den fortæller hvordan IIS 6.0 og OWA 2003 spiller sammen, samt viser nogle demoer af hvorledes man implementerer SSL ved brug af eget certifikat m.m.
Meget af indholdet minder en del om det jeg tidligere har skrevet om i kapitel 5 fra bogen Securing Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook Web Access, men det kom da alligevel som en overraskelse Chris anbefalede folk at læse kapitlet eller evt. købe hele bogen. Det skal nok sætte endnu mere spark i salget

Opinion: Exchange 2000, 2003 in Danger
Interessant artikel primært omhandlende MS05-021 (den kritiske Exchange sikkerhedspatch fra sidste måned):
"Microsoft released eight security bulletins in April. According to our analysis, one is critical, one important and another noteworthy. The rest can be applied with the next service pack or major version upgrade.
The critical one is MS05-021: Buffer overflow in Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003 SMTP service. The Exchange SMTP service uses proprietary Extended SMTP (ESMTP) protocol commands, or verbs, to support a variety of services. Amongst them is the X-Link2State verb, which provides an Exchange environment the ability to perform dynamic routing. Should one Exchange server in the routing environment fail or become unavailable, X-Link2State messages, via the SMTP protocol, advise all other Exchange servers so they can recalculate how to reroute e-mail. X-Link2State messages can contain a maximum of 1024 bytes of information, but it's possible to craft a malformed message which overflows a buffer and allow code of the attacker's choice to run."

Improving the performance of Virtual PC over Remote Desktop
RDP'er du ligesom jeg jævnligt en spand med en eller flere VirtualPC sessions kørende, så er der her et par gode performance tips (Fra Ben Armstrong's Blog):
1.Don’t use a desktop background. This just adds to the amount of data that Remote Desktop needs to send over the network.
2. Turn off mouse pointer shadows (‘Control Panel’ => ‘Mouse’ => ‘Pointers’ => uncheck ‘Enable pointer shadow’). This enables use to use hardware cursor acceleration – which will greatly improve the performance of the mouse inside of the guest operating system.
3. Ensure that video hardware acceleration is at its highest setting (‘Control Panel’ => ‘Display’ => ‘Settings’ => ‘Advanced’ => ‘Trouble Shooting’). Windows Server 2003 turns this setting down by default and it really affects performance in this scenario.
4. Don’t display window contents while dragging (‘Control Panel’ => ‘Display’ => ‘Appearance’ => ‘Effects’ => uncheck this option). Remote desktop usually disables this behavior on the physical computer – and it helps to disable it in the virtual machine too.
For dem der ikke skulle vide det er Ben Armstrong Program Manager på VirtualPC teamet hos Microsoft (blev oprindeligt ansat hos Connectix). Der var iøvrigt en ganske god VideoCast med ham på Channel9 for et par uger siden. Der var også en med Tony Donno (Testmanager på Virtual Server teamet) den anden dag.

Remote Desktop Assistant 1.0
Ikke så Exchange-relateret, men poster alligevel:
"The other day, I needed to connect to my new web server, and noticed that my Remote Desktop Connection list was cluttered up with old servers that I didn't deal with anymore. I tried deleting them by hovering over the server I wanted to delete from the list and hitting the delete key (works in IE), but that didn't work. So I looked it up in the MS Knowledge Base, and came up with this article.
I figured I wasn't the only one who would want to clean up their list, and so I wrote a little tool to help me (and others) out. It's called the Remote Desktop Assistant, and it's super easy."
