Exchange 12 Customer Technology Preview (CTP) build samt Webcasts

Som jeg nævnte i Januar udgaven af MSExchange.org nyhedsbrevet, har flere Microsoft kilder ladet mig fortælle Technet skiverne for Marts måned skulle inkludere et særligt Exchange 12 CTP build, dog har jeg ikke fået disse rygter bekræftet. Men så stødte jeg igår på denne post, der bør slå dette endeligt fast.

Har du iøvrigt husket at få planlagt din tid, således du ikke går glip af de 4 Exchange 12 webcasts, der ligeledes bliver sendt i marts måned (helt specifikt d. 14, 15, 16 og 17 marts)?

Hvem har indtil nu licenseret Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protokollen?

Jeg får jævnligt spørgsmål a la ovenstående. Da der hele tiden kommer flere spillere på banen (seneste var som flere sikkert husker Sony Ericsson) kan jeg anbefale at du følger med på dette Microsoft site, der løbende bliver opdateret.

Har du endnu ikke set den nye DirectPush feature inkluderet i Exchange 2003 SP2 live? Ja så kan jeg anbefale du ser nærmere på denne demo (21:29 minutter).

Exchange 12 og Public Foldere

Det har i en længere periode ikke været nogen hemmelighed Microsoft Exchange teamet på sigt går væk fra Public Foldere i Exchange produktet (bliver erstattet af Sharepoint, og ja jeg er enig der er lang vej før Sharepoint er et fornuftigt alternativ). Public foldere vil dog stadigvæk være at finde i Exchange 12, men uden de store forbedringer/nyheder.

Bemærk iøvrigt det ikke vil være muligt at tilgå Public foldere på en E12 Client Access Server via OWA.

Hurtigt i luften efter crash på en stor database

Havde kontakt med en kunde her i starten af ugen. Han stod i den uheldige situation at skulle have restoret en relativt stor Exchange database over remote backup linie. Vi regnede på det og fandt frem til det ville tage en hel del timer, inden restoren ville være fuldtført. Hvad gør man så hvis man har desperate brugere, der blot sidder og venter på at kunne komme til at kommunikere med omverdenen? Løsningen er en Exchange dial-tone restore (også kendt som "recover Now, restore later" metoden). Og hvad er det smarte ved den så? Kort fortalt går det ud på du blot mounter en blank database, og herefter restore produktionsdatabasen til en Recovery Storage gruppe. Herefter merger du de 2 databaser sammen til en. Hvis der er tale om en stor database, er det smartest at lave en swap af dem inden påbegyndelse af en merge.

Microsoft Announces Global Partner Support for its Mobile Messaging Solutions

Microsoft kom idag på 3GSM messen i Barcelona med endnu en MSFP relateret meddelse (ikke at den indeholder vanvittig meget ny info).

BARCELONA, Spain Feb. 13, 2006 Today at 3GSM World Congress 2006, Microsoft Corp. and its mobile operator and device-maker partners announced a broad range of services and Windows Mobile-based devices for business customers to cost-effectively deploy mobile messaging solutions. Leveraging the integration between Direct Push technology in Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), businesses can mobilize their employees on a unified infrastructure without the requirement to pay for additional and costly e-mail servers. This same technology is now available for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server and is also offered as a hosted service by a number of mobile operators around the world.

Leaking The Cause of MSFP Delays

Interessant post på Vlad's blog.

The speculation over MSFP being delayed by the Visto lawsuit is fairly rampant, but I've found another gravevine that has a somewhat more believable excuse:

AKU2, which is the release you are discussing, has MAJOR memory leaks and is not what could be considered viable (and yes, I am using the release). Patches are being worked on, but I think anything you see in the next 2-4 weeks is unpatched and therefore likely to require frequent resetting (but hey, these are MS devices!)

Whatever the outcome, expect MSFP to delayed in USA significantly (as is anything mobile coming to USA since we're the third world of mobility) and even further if it is not solid. I do not think carriers have forgotten the need to pull HP 6315 off the shelf three times before a solid firmware was delivered.

Microsoft Announces Exchange ActiveSync Licensing Agreement With Sony Ericsson: New Sony Ericsson P990 and M600 mobile phones to provide enhanced mobility capabilities delivered by Exchange Server

REDMOND, Wash. Feb. 6, 2006 Microsoft Corp. today announced that Sony Ericsson has licensed the Exchange ActiveSync protocol to enable more secure, wireless direct synchronization between Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Sony Ericssons P990 and M600 phones. This solution will help provide mobile workers with anywhere access to their complete Exchange Server 2003 information, including e-mail, calendar and contacts. For organizations that have deployed Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2, additional mobile enhancements such as Direct Push are also supported, providing instant access to newly received e-mail messages. Both of the new phones will be available in the second quarter of 2006.
Microsoft is experiencing significant momentum with Exchange Server with a five-year compound annual growth rate of more than 20 percent. According to analyst firm Gartner Dataquest, Microsoft Exchange is the 2004 market share leader in enterprise e-mail and calendaring software, based on new license revenue, with a share of 48 percent (Market Share: Enterprise E-Mail and Calendaring, Worldwide, 20022004, Gartner Dataquest, June 2005). By licensing Exchange ActiveSync, Sony Ericsson is now able to deliver a comprehensive mobile messaging solution to these customers.

Bliver VMWare GSX Server gratis?

Det kunne noget tyde på. Der er ikke nogen tvivl om VMWare vil gå en hård tid i møde, hvis de bibeholder de eksisterende licenspriser på deres GSX Server produkt, da Virtual Server 2005 R2 kan fås for den sølle sum af 99$.

VMware, an EMC subsidiary whose software lets multiple operating systems run on the same computer, is expected to announce next week that it will begin giving away one of its key products for free, CNET News.com has learned.

The company sells three core products, VMware Workstation, GSX Server and ESX Server, but competition is on the horizon in a market VMware once had to itself. On Monday, however, the company is expected to announce it will give away GSX for free, sources familiar with the plan said.

GSX runs on a "host" Windows or Linux operating system and then lets "guest" operating systems run atop it in compartments called virtual machines. The higher-end ESX product, in contrast, needs no host and runs below the operating system layer.

VMware may gain two advantages from the move. First, because virtual machines can be moved from GSX to ESX, customers who try the former may choose to upgrade to the latter. Second, giving the software away for free could make VMware's technology more popular and cement the company's lead over emerging rivals.

Today, GSX costs $1,400 for dual-processor servers and $2,800 for more powerful machines. ESX, while more expensive, permits more sophisticated features such as VMotion, which lets one running operating system be moved from one server to another while it's still running.
