The Importance of Auditing your Exchange 2003 Server(s)
Min seneste artikel for MSExchange.org er netop blevet udgivet.
"As most of you already know, messaging is one of the most mission-critical services in our organizations nowadays. In this article I’ll explain why auditing the Exchange 2003 Server(s) in your messaging environment is crucial.
Auditing Exchange usage is considered crucial nowadays, so if you are not already auditing the Exchange server(s) in your messaging environment now, you may not even realize your Exchange Servers could be experiencing problems! Even worse, you may discover that you have a problem but may not even be able to track it down. Auditing can be separated in a couple of different categories; there are Windows Server event auditing, Exchange diagnostics logging and finally 3rd party products which can solve the task for you."

Simple Tracking

"SAN JOSE, Calif. —16 Nov 2005— Intellisync Corporation (NASDAQ: SYNC), the leader in platform-independent wireless messaging, announced today that Intellisync has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Nokia (NYSE: NOK), a world leader in mobile communications. Under the terms of the agreement, Intellisync stockholders will receive USD 5.25 per share in cash for each Intellisync common share, implying an enterprise value of approximately USD 430 million or approximately EUR 368 million (on a fully-diluted basis).
This acquisition, which is subject to customary regulatory approvals and the approval of Intellisync’s shareholders, underscores Intellisync’s position in the mobile industry and its leadership in the carrier and enterprise markets in providing multi-device, multi-platform wireless software, mobile applications and synchronization. The acquisition of Intellisync supports Nokia’s goal to be the leader in enterprise mobility and enhances the ability of its customers to connect devices to data sources, applications and networks."

Outlook 12 BETA
Men men men...

Windows Live Search beta-mobile
Endelig en søgemaskine dedikeret Mobile enheder ![]()
"Windows Live Search beta for mobile devices lets you use your Web-enabled mobile device to search the Web for almost anything you’re looking for, just like on a PC. Search results are formatted to fit on your phone’s itty-bitty screen, so you can actually read them easily (a crazy idea, we know). With Local Search, you can find stuff in a specific location (Chinese restaurants in New York, for instance), and see maps with driving directions and phone numbers you can call with a single click. By the way, you need to have your own Web-enabled wireless device to use this service (you knew that, but our lawyers made us add it anyway)."

Exchange Server 2003 Common Criteria Certification
Sådan!
"Security begins with good software code and high-quality testing of that code, and it continues with the process used to identify, correct and update security vulnerabilities, and with third-party auditing based on recognized standards. Because of this, Microsoft submitted Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 for a through, independent evaluation based on the new Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation.
Ratified as an international standard in 1999, the Common Criteria replaces the old evaluation schemes, the US TCSEC, which provided the well-known "C2" rating, and the European ITSEC. The nations that embrace the Common Criteria believe that it will improve the availability of security-enhanced IT products, help customers evaluate IT products when making software purchase decisions, and contribute to higher levels of consumer confidence in IT product security."

Exchange 12 "fildeling" via RPC over HTTP

Operations Manager 2005 SLA Scorecard for Exchange udgivet
"The Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 SLA Scorecard for Exchange provides you with an executive dashboard that you can use to measure and trend service availability and workloads across multiple server roles in an Exchange Server messaging environment. This solution also enables you to define desired service levels and identify the cause of service outages."

Årsager til Exchange 12/64-bit beslutningen
Nedenfor ser du hvorfor Exchange 12 kun udkommer i en 64-bit version.
Background and factors in making this decision
Email is a “mission critical” application in most organizations today, and we continually hear from our customers that they are pushing the limits with their current messaging solutions. Demands being placed on messaging solutions continue to grow, and by nature 32-bit email server systems have memory limitations which restrict their ability to cost effectively support these needs. We see customers bumping up against the 32-bit threshold all the time through the support calls we receive about virtual memory fragmentation, kernel memory errors and the inability to use Terminal Services along with various other crashes. While the 3GB switch did some to alleviate the pain in Exchange 2000 and 2003, the reality is that it is not sufficient to address the 32 bit limitations and it just postpones the inevitable need for more addressable memory that we can only get from 64-bit. In addition we continue to get feedback from customers that they want to further consolidate their servers in order to reduce cost and complexity. Only by moving to 64 bit servers do we get the architecture that enables us to meet both of these customer needs.
Customer Benefits of 64 Bit
Although it is still early in the development cycle, internal testing with TAP customers and our own ITG dogfood deployment show significant performance benefits from 64 bit Exchange. By taking advantage of the additional memory available on x64-based systems, E12 is able to reduce the IOs per second which results in performance gains. Internal testing has shown nearly a 75% reduction in IOs per second versus Exchange 2003. What this means is that we can support nearly 4X the number of users on the same disks or require 1/4 the disks to support the same users from a throughput perspective. This reduction is important since it will proportionately decrease the investment in storage which accounts for ~80% of the capital cost of Mailbox servers. We can only achieve these large wins because we made changes that fully optimized for large memory at the expense of a 32 bit in-place compatibility story.
Below are some additional areas in which customers will see benefits from 64 bit:
Email access requirements
As access requirements and interaction with email through other applications increase, there is a greater demand on kernel memory in email servers. For example, additional email clients like mobile devices (e.g. cell phone using EAS or RIM), OWA, or Outlook using RPC/HTTP and other applications that access information in Exchange, like Office Communicator or MSN Desktop Search, all consume memory (per connection) on the Exchange server.
Why 64 bit helps
Today, as memory runs out on the Exchange Server, the only relief is to increase the number of servers to handle the same user base or to limit functionality available to users. With a 64-bit release of Exchange, companies will have a far more cost effective solution through the ability to add memory, not servers, to accommodate new clients and increased connectivity.
Enhanced security
Security is the top priority for most organizations, and many are designing deeply nested security groups to create a robust and flexible permissions system. The result is multiple security groups per user with each security group utilizing kernel memory resources.
Why 64 bit helps
As more granular rights are implemented in a 32-bit Exchange environment, the number of users on the server needs to be reduced or additional hardware purchased. Internet Protocol Security (IPSec), which is also commonly deployed in Exchange environments to bolster security, consumes additional resources on the system. With 64-bit systems, these types of security measures can be employed without requiring the number of users running on the server to be decreased.
Larger inboxes
As email volumes continue to grow and with more and larger attachments being sent, customers are demanding larger mailboxes.
Why 64 bit helps
Increase in mailbox size means fewer inboxes can be supported on each 32-bit server - which ultimately means more servers must be purchased. 64-bit servers provide more memory so customers can increase mailbox sizes without the need for additional servers.
Getting more out of storage
Storage is approximately 80% of the capital costs for an Exchange deployment and it is not fully utilized today.
Why 64 bit helps
Memory restrictions on 32-bit hardware limit customers from fully utilizing the space on their storage hard drives. The move to 64-bit systems will help to alleviate this, enabling customers to not only get more usage out of their storage systems today, but reduce the amount of hard drives they may need to purchase as inboxes grow.

Microsoft Acquires FolderShare, a File-Synchronization Technology Provider
"Deal aligns with Windows Live goal of connecting customers to the people and information that matter most to them.
REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 3, 2005 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it has acquired FolderShare™, a leading service in the emerging space of file synchronization and remote access technology that helps customers access information across multiple devices. FolderShare customers will continue to be able to enjoy the service at http://www.foldershare.com Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Launched in 2002 and owned and operated by Austin, Texas-based ByteTaxi Inc., the award-winning FolderShare service saves customers the hassle of sending large files via e-mail, burning them to CDs or DVDs and mailing them, or uploading them to a Web site. Instead, it allows customers to sync important information, making it well suited for personal or small-business use. The FolderShare service also enables private, remote access to customers’ own files from any Web browser."
