Windows 2003 SP1 Security Configuration Wizard and Exchange servers

"Now that Windows 2003 SP1 is out, I wanted to mention a tool that has shipped as part of Windows 2003 SP1. While the tool itself is not installed by SP1, the shortcut to the Help file is placed on the server desktop when SP1 is installed.

What does that have to do with Exchange? About the tool:

Security Configuration Wizard (SCW) is an attack surface reduction tool that is part of Windows Server 2003 SP1. SCW uses a roles-based metaphor (e.g. "File Server", "Web Server", "Domain Controller", etc.) to determine the desired functionality of a particular type of server, then disables functionality that is not required for the role(s) the server needs to perform. Specifically, SCW:

- Disables unneeded services
- Blocks unused ports
- Allows further (address or security) restrictions for ports that are left open
- Prohibits unnecessary web extensions (if running IIS)
- Reduces Protocol Exposure (SMB, LanMan, LDAP)
- Defines an Audit Policy
"

New Microsoft Exchange due out in 2006

Lidt Exchange 12 rygter:

"The next version of Microsoft's Exchange Server--software used to manage e-mail, contact lists and calendars--will arrive in 2006, according to a company executive.

Andy Lees, corporate vice president of marketing for Microsoft's server and tools business, revealed the ship date Tuesday. Previously, the Redmond, Wash.-based software company had said the software would arrive in 2006 or 2007. The software, currently called Exchange Server 12, will incorporate new features to handle voice mail and faxes.

The current version of Exchange Server was released in 2003. It's a dominant program in the market, but it faces competition from products sold by IBM, Novell, Sun Microsystems and others.

A quick way to exit Virtual PC 2004

"A little known feature of Virtual PC is that if you have a couple of virtual machines open and want to quickly exit Virtual PC all together - you can hold down the control key and click the 'X' on the Virtual PC Console. This will automatically save state all running virtual machines and exit Virtual PC - without prompting you at all."

Exchange Event ID 1221 represents ONLY the white space in the EDB file

Fra Jim McBee's (Exchange MVP) blog:

"After a recent posting here, someone asked me about Event ID 1221 and if that is the total amount of white space (free space) in both the EDB and the STM files. I had to do some research and ask around to get a definitive answer (thanks Andy D. for confirming!). Plus, as usual, I tested it on a test server. Here is a cut-and-paste copy of an event from one of my test servers:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Category: General
Event ID: 1221
Date: 2/20/2005 Time: 1:03:37 AM
User: N/AComputer: KILAUEA

Description:The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (KILAUEA)" has 1312 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

The message insinuates that there is 1312MB of free space in the store, but in reality there is 1312MB of free space in the EDB file only. The STM file is NOT reported. This is true for both Exchange 2000 and 2003. No word on whether Exchange 12 will address this.

However, if you run an offline compaction (ESEUTIL /D), this defrags both the EDB file and the STM file.

Small Business Server Update Enters Beta Testing

SBS 2003 SP1 går i BETA:

"Microsoft last month quietly slipped Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 into beta testing, and is on track to release the security-enhanced version by the middle of the year, the company said.

The first significant update to the server suite since October 2003, SBS 2003 SP1 will comprise Windows Server 2003 SP1 and updates to Exchange, SharePoint and, for premium customers, Internet Security and Accelerator (ISA) 2004 and SQL Server 2000 SP4. ISA 2004 is a robust, cost-effective edge firewall solution for small businesses, partners say.

Partners say SP1's greatest benefit will be delivering a single update that can be applied once. "The biggest advantage is aggregation of patches," said Michael Cocanower, president of ITSynergy, Phoenix, who has worked with the SBS SP1 beta code.

Security firm trashes customer e-mails

"GFI denied not testing the update, but apologized for the blunder and has promised all customers a free upgrade to its MailSecurity 9 product, which is available in two months' time. The company has also released a tool that can tell customers which e-mails were deleted and when."

"The requested media failed to mount" error message when you try to perform a backup in Windows SBS 2003

SYMPTOMS
When you configure a backup by using the Server Management console in Microsoft Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003, the backup operation may be unsuccessful, and you may receive the following error message in the backup log when the backup starts:
The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted.
The backup destination may also be set to "miniQIC" instead of to the actual tape drive, and you may not be able to change this selection.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if your tape drive supports tapes with different media block sizes. When you configure a backup by using the SBS 2003 Server Management console, the backup program selects the first tape type that is available, and this selection may not correspond to the tape that is in the drive. This problem is known to occur with the Seagate Travan 20 tape drive. However, this problem may occur with any tape drive that supports multiple tape types.

"A few weeks ago, we asked you for your list of questions about E12 and said we'd pick a few and post answers on the one year anniversary of this blog, February 9th. Well as you can see, I totally missed that date :-) Very sorry about that and I'd be happy to list off my excuses, but let's get on to the good news instead: for the foreseeable future, we are going to have a monthly post about E12, the content will usually be based on the questions we get from you. Exchange 12 To Ride a Faster JET

"The JET storage engine will power Exchange 12 just as it did Exchange 2000 and Exchange Server 2003. A Microsoft spokesperson downplayed the technological role in JET's survival. "The decision to ship the next version of Exchange with JET was based on many factors, but the primary reason was customers. Staying with JET will mean customers will not be faced with the migration work associated with moving to a new store.""

WinZip Companion for Outlook 1.0 i RTM:

"WinZip Companion for Outlook makes it easy for users of Microsoft Outlook to zip and encrypt attachments when sending messages.

Zipping attachments saves transmission time, conserves space in Outlook mailboxes, and saves disk space for both the sender and recipient of the e-mail. The Companion can be configured to automatically zip your attachments, ask whether or not you want them zipped, or let you zip and attach files manually with just a few mouse clicks. Toolbar and menu items allow you to control the Companion's functionality on a message-by-message basis.
